Vittaya, school on a raft (floating schoolhouse)

He had to leave home at dawn, drove through the wood, took a boat and spent several hours on a boat over a body of water before he reached the school. The school sat in the middle of a dam, surrounded by mountains and big body of water. The floating schoolhouse is called ” Ban Geng Vittaya School, raft branch”.

People around the dam make their living by catching fish.  The school was created to provide opportunity for children around the area to get their education.

Song had to teach four unruly children. Even though there were just four of them, all of them were from diffident grade. Song had to teach each of his students every subject by himself. In addition, he had to deal with the condition of no electricity and no tap water.  Song also had to confront with the isolation and loneliness.  He was unable to connect with the outside world due to lack of cell phone signal nor internet.

The only thing that helped Song to relieve his loneliness was a diary.  A diary was left at the school by a former teacher “Ann” (Ploy Shermarn).  Ann left the school before Song took over the teaching position. In the diary, Ann talked about her life and about other teachers who taught at the school.  Ann didn’t just write about how tough it was to work there, she also talked about teachers who came to work at the school… that all of them were dumped by their boyfriends!  As a result, the school got a nickname “T.T.V – Thook Thing Vittaya” (Dumped @Vittaya).

Song learned about Ann from the diary.  He felt that Ann was the only friend who could  really understand his feelings.  He felt their bonding through those words.  The more he read, the more he missed the real Ann. Even though he wanted to meet Ann so much, he had no idea how he was going to find her.

In  2013, fate brought Ann back to teach at the school once again. However, Song left the school before she came back. When Ann came back to teach at the school, she found her old diary that she left at the school. When Ann picked up the diary and flipped through its pages, she was surprised to find Song’s writing continued from where she wrote. Song shared his feelings while he was teaching at the school, particularly in hope that one day he would meet Ann.

Ann didn’t know why Song left the school, where he went, or even who he was.

The thought of someone thinking of her, been at the same place with her was quite something.  Her comeback to teach at the school this time changed her view of being dumped to a more nostalgic one.

She missed someone… she never even met…
